In 2002, the decision to introduce Sixth Form studies to St. Mary's College was taken. This decision was based on a vision for young people which would meet the needs of those who aspire to Further and Higher Education in Colleges and Universities. In August 2004 our first cohort achieved 100% pass rate and moved on to study degree courses in a range of professions including teaching, quantity surveying, nursing, social work, business, ICT and finance. This success continues year after year.
In St. Mary's we feel that we provide a disciplined atmosphere in which a young person can grow and develop. Students are given academic challenges which they can meet because of the individual attention of their teachers. Private study and work takes place either in the Library or in the Computer Suites.
Sixth Formers are treated with care and respect and are also asked to take on responsibilities in the school. These responsibilities include Year 8 Mentoring, the Reading Buddy Project, membership of the School Council, the Formal Committee, Fund Raising, Friends for Romania, GAA Coaching, the Pope John Paul II Award and the Eco Committee.
Working with other schools and colleges in the area as part of the Rural Learning Partnership allows more choice for our students. At Post-16, students take three subjects: all three may be chosen from the list of subjects on offer at St Mary's College or alternatively two may be chosen from the St Mary's College list and the third from the list of subjects on offer at St Patrick's College, Maghera.
