Assessment for Learning

Assessment for Learning is an important part of teaching. It is used to diagnose problems with learning and to monitor individual progress. Assessing pupils gives information for future planning for teaching and learning. It is used to help pupils set SMART targets for their own learning.

Continuous Assessment in St. Mary's includes:

·         End of topic tests

·         Coursework

·         Presentations

·         Group Work

·         Assessments involving ICT

The assessment may be:

·         Written

·         Oral

·         Aural (listening)

·         Practical

·         Investigative

·         Word processed

Pupils are assessed regularly. They know in advance what they must do and have agreed success criteria with their teacher. Marking is very positive - often "two stars and a wish", which means two positive comments and one challenge for development.

Pupils are asked to set targets for the future in the light of their assessment and to see if they have achieved those targets. In this way pupils become more independent learners and can manage their own progress.

Homework

Homework is seen as an essential part of our pupils’ education. Homework is given regularly; it is carefully recorded by pupils and checked by Subject Teachers and Form Teachers. Parents are asked to sign the Student Planner weekly so that a close eye can be kept on progress.

The homework set varies between year groups and subjects. It may include:

·         Research

·         Projects

·         Completing work begun in class

·         Reading

·         Writing

·         Spelling

·         Making a model

·         Art work

·         Revision

·         Target setting

·         Self evaluation

Reporting

Parents will receive reports about their son's/daughter's progress twice annually - one is a full report (Pupil Profile at Key Stage 3) and one a shorter report. The annual parent/teacher meeting for each year group is a very important means of reporting on progress.

Parents and pupils are invited to comment on reports by means of an Evaluation Sheet. Parents are encouraged to contact the school at any time if they have concerns about their son's/daughter's progress.
